FUZZY LOGIC

Binary logic is one where there can be only two truth values for any particular problem. For example a statement can be either true or false, not both at the same time. This binary logic is extensively used in science and maths. This is als called black and white logic or yes / no logic. It is being called black and white logic because it assumes that things can be either black or white not of any color in between. It is called yes/no logic because it assumes that there can be only two answers for any question considered i.e. yes or no ; true or false.

The best example for an application using this logic is a digital computer. It uses 1's and 0's, on-state or off-state.

But things are not exactly binary in real world situations. Many times there are varying degrees of truth values for question considered. So, ther should be some alternate logic for such situations. This logic is called fuzzy logic. In fuzzy logic truth value for any problem considered may be any thing between 0 and 1. Here it can be continuously varying between the extreme limits 0 and 1. There can be any shade of grey between that black and white. Things can be yes at the same time be no.

Neural networks best explain this logic.

Both binary and fuzzy logic have their own advantages and disadvantages. The main advantage of binary logic is that it is simple and easy to understand and explain. But it is not quite accurate.

Fuzzy logic on the other hand, is complex, difficult ot understand and explain. But it is more accurate.

Most people assume probability for fuzzy logic. Probability is substituted where information available is not sufficient. But fuzziness is a degree of truth value. Probability is eliminated with precise information.

Fuzzy logic is used nowadays in equipments using artificial intelligence where binary logic is not sufficient. It is also used in management decisions.
